Researchers from the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA), have released a ‘how-to’ video for growers on how to use plant washes to detect pests like Thrips parvispinus.

The video, shared recently on ONfloriculture.com, offers a step-by-step guide for simple, on-farm washes to detect ‘low levels of critical pests.’

“Plant washes have long been recognized as the ‘gold standard’ for detecting low levels of pests in greenhouse experiments or to get accurate counts of natural enemies (such as mites) on the crop,” a note on the ONfloriculture website says about the video.

“We’ve adapted this method to be done easily on-farm, with supplies you can get from Amazon or the Dollar Store.”

Not only does the video break down this process, but offers advice for following up on your findings should the detected pest turn out to be parvispinus.

The video, researchers say, can be useful for monitoring floriculture and vegetable crops.
